Economics / The GPI and the GDP Corporations and government agencies invest significant resources in developing useful performance metrics and standards so that they can focus their limited resources on those strategic business processes most likely to achieve for them competitive advantage and commercial success. Even the average eight-year-old knows intuitively that you get more of whatever you measure for -- especially if rewards or resources are involved. But, at the most important level of governance, at the national level -- our accounts and performance metrics are actually an impediment to our national security. They encourage the wrong things and measure them as contributions to economic performance; they hide incredible waste (when we have no resources to waste), and they vastly under-report strategically important investments (that thereby get neglected or unfunded). Public policy is informed and guided by what is visible and measured, and we are measuring for failure. ehj2 |
